Waggon & Horses Surbiton

Nestled at 1 Surbiton Hill Road, Waggon & Horses Surbiton brings together the charm of a traditional British pub with the vibrant energy of a modern social hub. Whether you're swinging by for a chilled pint, a hearty bite, or some live entertainment, this spot knows how to keep things interesting. With its welcoming vibe and standout food, it's easy to see why it’s become a go-to in Surbiton for both locals and visitors alike.

Start with the menu, because that’s where things get really exciting. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by the aroma of pepperoni pizza fresh out of the oven, golden halloumi fries, and crispy chicken wings with just the right amount of kick. The Calzone is a crowd-pleaser-crusty on the outside and oozing cheese and fillings inside. If you’re in the mood for pub classics, the Beer Battered Cod with Chunky Chips and the Chicken Burger served with crunchy coleslaw are sure to hit the spot.

For burger lovers, the Somerset Burger and Crispy Chicken Parma are favorites worth mentioning. They’re big, bold, and unapologetically indulgent. The Pizza Fiorentina with its earthy spinach and gooey egg center is another gem for those who lean toward more refined flavors. And if you’re simply after a good bar snack while catching a game, the Padron Peppers and Calamari & Whitebait are excellent options to nibble on between sips of beer or wine.

Speaking of drinks, this place isn’t just serving beverages-it’s curating experiences. The Strawberry Frozen Daiquiri is perfect on a warm day, while the Tokyo Iced Tea packs a punch and gets the party started. There’s a well-chosen wine list, a wide selection of beers on tap, and enough cocktails to keep any happy hour fun and interesting. The bar also serves spirits and offers happy-hour drinks that pair perfectly with both weekday wind-downs and weekend celebrations.

What makes Waggon & Horses Surbiton really stand out is the atmosphere. There’s something happening almost every night-be it quiz night, live performances, or sports events broadcasted on big screens. The bar games are a hit, creating a playful, laid-back vibe. It’s also wheelchair-accessible (with both entrance and seating friendly to all), and while there’s no dedicated accessible car park, it still earns points for being inclusive and easy to navigate indoors.

If you prefer the open air, there’s outdoor seating available, and for those who want to enjoy the food and drink from the comfort of home, both delivery and takeaway options are on the table. It's not uncommon to see someone grabbing a quick drink solo, thanks to the relaxed, unpretentious setting that makes it easy for anyone to feel at home.

Whether you're popping in for a quick pint, planning a casual dinner, or celebrating a birthday with a side of Birthday Cake (yes, they serve that too), Waggon & Horses Surbiton offers a little something for everyone. From its standout Pizza Salami to its curated drink menu, it’s the kind of place that effortlessly blends great food, good drinks, and even better vibes.

One of those unsuspecting boozers that really impressed me on first visit, and has remained a favourite when pub crawling, a quiet beer or can't decide where to go. Spacious, multiple rooms, mismatched furniture, dart board, huge garden and tables out front to embrace the sun-trap in the summer evenings while inhaling the Surrey SUV fumes, make this a pub that will surely tick many people's boxes. Food is pub grub but a focus on pizzas and "best burgers in town", although I've not tried them. Bold claim that needs to be tested, however Surbiton has a distinct lack of burger joints! Next time. Beer still seems to be Young's despite being a Ram Co although could be Punch Taverns now. I'm not sure. Opted for 1664. Decent. Clean. Cold. Your usual macro lager options and 4 ales that rarely change, but the spirit/mixers/cocktails get a lot of effort put into them. Service was friendly as always, guy behind the bar brought a water bowl and treat over for the puppy without being asked, checked in and made conversation. Another locals local pub where you don't need to be local to feel local. History-wise, this dates back to 1689 first documented when the Landlord was prosecuted for serving on a Sunday. The sign on the front dates back to 1812, leased by Youngs since 1831, and around this time a "trace horse" was kept at the pub to assist wagons up the hill. In 1920s and 1930s the front yard was rented out by Charles Cooper to prep racing cars for Brooklands driver Kaye Don. After the war, Charles went on to found Cooper Cars, which had 16 grand Prix Victories between '58 and '67, and the name lives on now as Mini Cooper. More recently, Joe Reilly was a landlord here for 35 years until 2002, a mammoth stint, and was awarded an MBE for his relentless charity work. (Credit again to local historian Richard Holmes). Nowadays, it's family run since 2016, a warm welcome guaranteed, pub quiz on Mondays, 241 pizzas on Tuesdays and happy hour cocktails (5pm-8pm) - your only hard decision will be figuring out which comfy seat you want to slowly submerge yourself into. (Pub has since been repainted, inside remains the same)

I Hired the Function room for a 30th Birthday. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. We were able to make the room our own and they helped us move the furniture so it suited our needs. The staff were so friendly and catered to us with such kindness. Thankyou so much for making it such a lovely event, we had the best time and it was night to remember, thankyou again. - Gareth and Kate

We reserved an area for a party at the waggon & horses, and would highly recommend the pub. Communication was great when booking and the team answered all my questions I had quickly. The space was perfect for hosting, and the pub had a good vibe all evening. The staff were super helpful, bringing cocktails to our area, clearing glasses and bringing out our pre-ordered food at the agreed times, meaning we didn’t have to think about anything and could enjoy the night. Thanks waggon and horses team!
